Dennis was born on September 21, 1951 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota to Wilford & Louise Rostad. Baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, MN, he graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1969, and from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1973 with a BA degree in Biology. Although one of his instructors thought he would make a good medical doctor, However, Denny was a natural born environmentalist and so followed his passion by working for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in St. Paul, MN for four years. Then, after building a house painting business in California, he returned to his chosen field in 1992 as Senior Epidemiologist with the state of Arkansas. He loved this job especially because he was able to preserve clean water and soil by inspecting and stopping companies from disposing toxic chemicals in rivers and fields. In 2009, he was in a car accident and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury which brought his 17 year career to an early end.
Denny embraced life fully in so many dimensions. As a teen, he would host pickup baseball games with the neighborhood kids. Deeply caring for people, he loved his family tremendously. He cherished his twin daughters, and loved taking them on camping trips to national parks. He was known for making multiple pans of caramel rolls and delivering them to friends. Determined and not afraid of risks, he would drive a vintage Vauxall (British car with unavailable parts) hundreds of miles over night to a lineman job. Thinking outside the box, and as a champion of the underdog, he would invite a pool hall denizen to church, and then drive him there as his personal guest. Loving nature, his Arkansas home looked over a wooded pond where he was able to see wildlife and birdwatch.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Lorrie, Alexander, Arkansas; daughters Shannon Rostad, Bryant, AR, Danielle (Stephen) Davenport, Benton, AR, stepson Jason (Blanca) Salter, Santa Clarita, CA, all from his previous wife, Dori, Benton, AR; grandchildren: Dallas-Avery, Bodie, Joshua Salter; brothers Larry, Minneapolis, MN, Dale (Staney), Excelsior, MN
Sister: Barb, Conroe, Texas; best friend: Steve Johnson, Pelican Rapids, MN; nephews, nieces, and many cousins
He was preceded in death by his parents.
