Mearl Joseph Solberg
Mearl was born January 23, 1921 to Johanna (Johnson) and Oscar Solberg in Aurora, Nebraska and passed away on Saturday, October 17 in Greeley, CO. He grew up on the family farm and learned many skills that he used throughout his life. He enjoyed camping, fishing, wood working especially lathe work. He also enjoyed playing cards and reading books by his favorite author Louis L'Amour. Mearl enjoyed both baseball and football and was an avid fan of both the Broncos and Rockies.
Mearl enlisted August 19, 1942 in the Navy where he served during World War II as a Navy Aviator until June 21, 1946. He was a track star in the Navy when he set the Navy record for high hurdles without track shoes.
Mearl played semi-pro baseball for the Pittsburg Pirates farm team and later coached American Legion Baseball from 1963 to 1973 in Longmont. Mearl played the cornet in high school and for many years afterward instilling in his daughters the love of music.
On November 18, 1944 he married Eleanor Struble in Miami Florida. After 29 years of marriage, he lost her to cancer on November 8, 1974. He married Gladys Nielsen O'Connor on September 27, 1975 in Longmont, Colorado and after 38 years of marriage, he lost her on May 4, 2014.
Mearl worked as a commercial pilot, in construction as a finish carpenter, was an Air Traffic Controller, and an Instructor in Air Traffic control at the University of Oklahoma. He was a 60+year member of the Elks, member of the American Legion, and was a member of the St. Vrain Masonic lodge.
Mearl is survived by his children: Shelly (Larry) Lantz of Greeley, Susan (Scott) Brooks of Littleton, and Sharon (Kevin) Carbaugh of Greeley; step children Tom O'Connor of Denver, Mary O'Connor (Shah) of Las Cruces NM and Annie O'Connor (Ken) of Boulder; grandchildren Todd (Amanda) Lantz, Nathan Lantz, Jacob (Teresa) Lantz, Connor (Larissa) Brooks, Cole Brooks, Heidi (Josh) Lanning, and Kyle (Miranda) Carbaugh; step-grandchildren Amy (David) Clark, Reed Ketteler, Nikki Nejad, Alex Nejad , Kelly (Eric) Kenny, Casey (Charlie Irwin) O'Connor, Dylan Griffith, Jacob (Brittany) Boetcher, and Jonah Boetcher; as well as fourteen great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in Death by his parents, wife Eleanor, wife Gladys, brothers Glenn and Loren and sister Ora Ellen, step-daughter, Martha, and a grandchild, Troy.
Celebration of life will be in Longmont at Carroll-Lewellen Funeral Home at 503 Terry Street. Interment at Mountain View Cemetery, Longmont.
