Nekrolog: C. Thomsen, 95, of Rockville died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19 at the United Church of Christ in Rockville with Rev. Brian Fugleberg officiating. Visitation was Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. Burial was in the Souleville Cemetery near Rockville. Music was provided by Dorothy Zinnel. Pallbearers were Dan Dethlefs, Craig Dethlefs, DeWayne Thomsen, Roger Thomsen, Cody Thomsen, Lanny Thomsen, Lucas Thomsen and Cory Thomsen. Niels Thomsen was born Dec. 5, 1908 on the family farm east of Rockville to Thomas and Anna (Steffensen) Thomsen. He was educated in Rockville and graduated from Rockville High School in 1927. He married Lillian Schmaljohn on March 22, 1933 at Dannebrog. He farmed his entire life. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, playing cards, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was instrumental in getting 4-H started in his area of Sherman County. The Blue Ribbon Rovers 4-H CIub was organized in March of 1949 with seven boys taking a weed project. The girls formed their own club but in 1950 they joined the Blue Ribbon Rovers. By 1951 there were 56 members. That year the Sunset 4-H Club of Austin and the Blue Ribbon Rovers formed the first and only 4-H Band in Sherman County, The Sunset Rovers 4-H Band. That year they played at the State Fair. The club won many county and state awards during the ten years he was the leader. He also organized 4-H softball for Sherman County. He was the livestock superintendent at the Sherman County Fair for several years. Thomsen was the chairman of the Extension Board for many years. He and several others organized the Rockville Rural Fire District in 1959 and were responsible for building the Rockville Fire Hall. He served as president for 31 years. He was a Rockville Township committee member in the Corn and Hog Program in 1935 when it started. Survivors include his wife of Rockville; two sons, Wayne Thomsen and wife, Jean of Rockville and LaVern Thomsen and wife, Joyce of Grand Island; one daughter, Marian Dethlefs and husband, Dutch of Ravenna; one sister, Johanna Thomas and husband, Henry of Rockville; thirteen grandchidren and 23 greatgrandchildren. He was Preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers, two sisters, Hilda and Mabel; one son, Kenneth and an infant daughter. Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Dan Dethlefs, Craig Dethlefs, DeWayne Thomsen, Roger Thomsen, Cody Thomsen, Lanny Thomsen, Lucas Thomsen and Cory Thomsen. Lillian Thomsen was born Jan. 5, 1914 to Robert and Veronica (Matejka) Schmaljohn in Sherman County. She was educated at District 19 and graduated from Rockville High School in 1932. She married Niels Thomsen on March 22, 1933 in Dannebrog. They made their home on a farm east of Rockville. They moved to Rockville in 1993. She moved to Seneca Sunrise in Ravenna on Feb. 13, 2007. Thomsen was a member of the United Church of Christ in Rockville, Ladies Aid and was a 4-H Leader. She loved quilting, gardening, birds and her grandkids. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Jean Thomsen of Rockville and LaVern and Joyce Thomsen of Grand Island, one daughter and son-in-law, Marian and Dutch Dethlefs of Ravenna, 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, a sister, Evelyn Pedersen of Tacoma, Wash. and a sister-in-law, Johanna Thomas of Aurora. She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 16, 2004, a son, Kenneth, two brothers and two sisters. Rasmussen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
