Tanner Tolman: Hans' left his family on 5 April 1879 and traveled with a 23 year old girl named Ida whom he called his wife. A few days later they appear in Hamburg and then on 23 Apr 1879, they arrived in Brooklyn. I believe the possible match you found on the 1880 census in Brooklyn is him. There is also a matching Ida Sander living Brooklyn at that time and I believe this is the Ida he came to America with, although it appears at that time they had separated because he says he is widowed and she says she is single.

Leadville Daily/Evening Chronicle, January 17, 1891:
A sensational Suicide.
Hans Sander, after several attempts succeds in ending his career with morphine.
On account of his infedelity his wife leaves him in Denver and comes to Leadville, where he finds her - the explanation that followed.
One of the most determined and sensational suicides that has ever taken place in the city happened yesterday morning, when one Hans Sander, a well known musician of Denver, suicided, after three different attempts at taking his life by an overdose of morphine. The causes that led the awful deed were brought about by Sander's own action, again showing how easily(?) it is for one to leave the path of rectitude, that eventually brings ruin and desolation to the offender and those dependent upon him for support.

Sander was a man gifted above the average, upright in all his dealings and actions, until he met a woman in Denver, who eventually drove him to take his own life.
Seven years ago Sander married a widow in Salt Lake, and they shortly afterward removed to Denver, where he procured employment as a musician. Later he opend a music store at 2745 Larimer Street, where he carried on a succesful busines. It increased so that he enlarged his store. and hired help to assist him. One of his employees was a Mrs. Laura Johnson, a very handsome brunette, aged 24 years, and the mother of two exceedingly pretty children. She lived with her husband, who was a Mormon, and seemingly their relations were of the most affectionate nature. Last summer Mrs. Sander went to Montana on a visit, and while absent Sander and mrs. Johnson, forgetting their marriage vows, became criminally intimate. When mrs. Sander returned to Denver two month ago, she found out the true atatus of affairs and told her husband she would live no longer with him, and that he had better get a divorce from her and marry mrs. Johnson. She took her two daughters with her, children by her former husband, and left, arrivinf in Leadville two weeks ago yesterday. She secured a house at 363 East Seventh Street, and started to look for work for herself and children, who are aged respectively 18 and 10 years.
After being left by his wife Sander's conseience kept upbraiding him for the part he had played, so he left Denver and came in search of his wife, arriving here last saturday. After hunting the city high and low he succeded in finding his family last tuesday. He told his wife how ....... he was, and stated that life was not worth living and determined to commit suicide. He also prevealed upon her to die with him, and on tuesday evening, before retiring, each took a dose of ............, only causing extreme sicknes ....... vomiting. Wednesday evening Sander again took ...... , but dr. A.J. McDonald this time saved his life. The third attempt was succesful, .......the last and fatal dose thursday evening, from the effect of which he died yesterday morning at 6:30 o'clock.
