Dennis G. Awtry, 61, of North Platte passed away Jan. 14, 2008, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
He was born to Gerald and Doris Nelsen Awtry on June 30, 1946, near Curtis in his grandparents' sod house. He grew up in McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1964.
Dennis entered the United States Army in 1965 and served in Japan for one year at an Army hospital before serving in Vietnam. After his discharge, he moved to North Platte in 1971 and worked at Nebraska Machinery.
He married Donna Schmidt on June 18, 1977, at the Messiah Lutheran Church.
He was part owner and operator of San-Dens Arts and Crafts with his sister. He was a commodities broker with his cousin, Jim, and then he decided to go back to college. He graduated from Kearney State College with a bachelor's degree and master's degree in art education.
Dennis taught at St. Patrick's High School for the last 12 years, finally finding his calling as a teacher. He enjoyed his students so very much.
He belonged to the Messiah Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Donna of North Platte; a son, Joe Awtry of Lincoln; a sister, Sandy (Dick) Foran of North Platte; and a brother, Wayne Awtry of McCook.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial has been established in his name to the North Platte Catholic School Endowment Trust, the Messiah Lutheran Church or the Callahan Cancer Center.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at the Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lynn Parsons officiating.
Cremation was chosen and register book signing will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.
