Navy Cross Citation
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Loren Erlwin Nelson, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Dive Bomber in Bombing Squadron FIFTEEN (VB-15, attached to the U.S.S. ESSEX (CV-9), in action against enemy Japanese surface forces over the Sibuyan Sea during the Battle for Leyte Gulf in the Philippine Islands on 24 October 1944. In the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire from the whole enemy formation, under extremely hazardous combat conditions, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Nelson participated in a bombing attack on the Japanese battleship Nagato. Fearlessly maneuvering through withering hostile fire of all calibers, he pressed home his attack and, by his expert airmanship, obtained a direct hit which caused certain damage. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Nelson's outstanding courage and determined skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

BARBARA NELSON, 95, of Longwood, FL died at home. She graduated from Takoma Park Academy, completed a business curriculum at Strayer College, was a Navy wife for 22 years and had a career as a dental office administrator. Preceded in death by her husband, Loren E in 2008, surviving re sons, Loren, Jr and Dennis; grandchildren, Emily, Todd, Erica and Douglas and great-grandchild, Henry. Graveside services will be held on December 12, 2015. Published in the Orlando Sentinel from November 20, 2015.
