Nekrolog:
Boyd Max Carter, former Provo City Fire Chief, passed away August 30, 2014, from complications related to a fall. He was born May, 1926 to Loren Ezra and Clara Hoier Carter.
Boyd was born, raised and educated in Provo, Utah. Upon graduation, he went to work for Pan American Airways and transferred to Navy active duty at the age of 17. He was assigned to a Navy mortar crew during the war, and was present at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and other actions. While in Iwo Jima, he witnessed both famous flag raisings. In addition, he also served in Korea, China and Japan after the war.
Boyd married Beth Casper on January 1, 1948 in Elko, Nevada. Together they raised three children. He always claimed that his love and commitment was for his family. When his children were younger, they camped, hunted, and fished frequently together. Later they made numerous excursions throughout the western United States and Canada. Boyd always maintained a youthful enthusiasm for the beauty of the Utah outdoors. He loved his patio; enjoyed gardening; and thrilled to treks in the mountains as well as jaunts to the desert.
Boyd worked at the Provo Municipal Airport and was a member of the National Guard air unit until he joined the Provo City Fire Department, where he served for 38 years. He rose through the ranks and became the Provo Fire Chief for the last five years prior to retirement. Boyd maintained a passion for aviation all of his life. He participated in the building, rebuilding, and repairing of several hundred aircraft and helicopters during his career. He also enjoyed being a pilot for over 25 years. Additionally, Boyd served as a lobbyist for numerous years for Provo City at the State legislature. Chief Carter also enjoyed teaching fire-fighting, welding, hydraulics, and other subjects during his career.
Boyd was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 49 years, Beth. He is survived by two daughters, Ricki Carter (American Fork), Sherri Carter (West Jordan), and one son, Chris Boyd (Gaylynn) Carter (Spring Lake). He is also survived by one granddaughter, Robin Root (Spring Lake), and three great-grandsons, Klayson, Tristyn and Braxtyn. Additionally, he is survived by one sister, Bertha Cooper (Bob).
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 East Center Street, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the mortuary, Wednesday, September 3, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Thursday from 10:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery.
