Murray was born to Herman and Marguerite (Rempel) Backhaus, he was raised in Millard and was very active in sports (baseball and basketball.) He was a member of the Millard team which won the 1950 State American Legion baseball championship. He was also a member of the Millard High School state basketball championship team. He graduated from the University of Nebraska lettering four years in baseball and basketball.
He married Dixie Borgaard on August 1, 1954. He retired from the Air Force in 1977 having attained the rank of Lt. Colonel and was a Master Navigator. He later continued his career at the Bank of Millard. Murray enjoyed managing his farms for the past 35 years. In his later years, he became involved in ballroom dancing. He enjoyed working out and spending time with his friends and family.
