Nekrolog: Celebration of Life Services for Mary Peterson were held on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand, Nebraska with Pastor Matt Hacker officiating. Interment was held at the Moses Hill Cemetery in Phelps County, Nebraska. Marilyn Kay "Mary" Peterson, 60 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. Mary was born October 5, 1955 at North Platte, Nebraska, the fifth of six children born to James and Helen (Nelsen) Ewald. Mary's primary education began at a one-room school house north of Curtis, Nebraska until attending Medicine Valley Public School, where she graduated from Medicine Valley High School with the class of 1973. She then pursued higher education at Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska, where Mary received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis on Early Childhood. On September 24, 1976 she was united in marriage to Dennis E. Peterson, north of Curtis at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church and to this union four children were born: Seth Edward, Jillian Kay, Nathan James, and Lucas Paul. The family made their home in Bertrand, where Mary operated a Pre-School out of their house for several years. In 1982, they relocated to a farm north of Bertrand, where she continued her pre-school. Mary loved life on the farm, where she enjoyed raising sheep, chickens, ducks and was devoted to tending to her garden and rose bushes. In 1997, Mary began her employment at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, where she served as the Unit Secretary until her retirement. Mary enjoyed sewing dresses for her daughter and granddaughters, quilted many items that she loved to give to family and friends, and will be remembered for her excellent cooking. Many nights were enjoyed sitting with Dennis on their patio together in the evening talking and listening to the birds. Mary was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she typed the bulletin for many years and served as the church secretary as well. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bill Ewald; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Harold and Betty Peterson. Mary leaves to celebrate her life; her husband of 39 years, Dennis of Bertrand; her four children: Seth Peterson and his wife, Angel of Omaha, Nebraska, Jillian Beard and her husband, Jacob of Indianapolis, Indiana, Dr. Nathan Peterson of Tokyo, Japan, and Lucas Peterson of Lincoln, Nebraska; four grandchildren: Jana, Gage, and Ava Peterson and Henry Beard; three sisters: Karen Lehman and her husband, Jerry of Farnam, Nebraska, Ann Hagan and her husband, Pat of Smithfield, Nebraska, and Jo Jurgens and her husband, Rod of Lamar, Missouri; one brother, Lynn Ewald and his wife, Patty of Curtis; sister-in-law, Nelda Ewald of Daytona Beach, Florida; two brothers-in-law: David Peterson and John Paul Peterson and his long-time girlfriend, Chris Walston all of Bertrand; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. \endash 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. \endash 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska. A memorial has been established in Mary's honor and will be designated at a later date.
