Nekrolog efter mand: W. Smith, 73 ALLIANCE - Alvin Winfield Smith, 71, died Thursday, May 14, 1992 at home, 931 Dakota. He was born Mach 1, 1919 in Columbus, Ohio to Arthur and Grace Smith. He married Edith Margaret Nielsen May 15, 1943 in Alliance. Smth is survived by his wife of the home, a son Willard A. Smith of' Boulder, Colo.; a daughter, Karen J. Graves of Alliance; a granddaughter, Vanessa J. Graves of Alliance: two brothers, Minard E. of Helix, Ore, and Heman L. of Hudson, Ohio: a sister, Viola B. Leihenseder of Hamilton, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister, and an infant son. Smith had lived in Alliance since 1943 where he was a self-empoyed contractor/carpenter. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and instrumental in the construction of the origirial church building on Eighth and Black Hills; a volunteer instructor for the Arnerican Red Cross Swimming Program: a boy Scout leader; and a past member of the American Legion. Smith fought in World War II from Jan. 27, 1942 to Sept. 27, 1945 in the 82nd Airbome Division, 507th Paratroop Squadron.
Nekrolog: Margaret Smith, 89 Nov 19, 1912-Jan 23, 2002 ALLIANCE - Edith Margaret Smith, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Highland Park Care Center. She was born Nov. 19, 1912, at Denton to Johann Marinus Nikolaj "John" and Elise Hansine (Stenberg) Nielsen. The family moved to Alliance in 1918. While in high school she was active in 4-H, with a special interest in horticulture. After graduating from Alliance High School in 1930, she spent a number of years working on the family farm and helping her mother with the home. She met Alvin Winfield Smith, a paratrooper stationed at the Alliance Airbase, and they were married May 15, 1943. After he returned from Europe, the couple had two more children and built a home in Alliance. Edith stayed at home to raise the children and tend her flowers. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church's Womens Circle, the Toastmistress Club and Immanuel Lutheran Church. After her children had grown, Edith became her husband's assistant in his carpentry business. She is survived by a son, Willard A. Smith of Boulder, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Karen J. and Ed Trickler of Alliance; one granddaughter and her husband, Vannesa J. (Graves) and Kris Fritzsche of Denver, Colo.; and one great-grandson, Benjamin Fritzsche. She also is survived by two sisters, Esther Von Bargen of Alliance and Gladys and her husband Mearl Solberg of Loveland, Colo.; and brother-in-law and his wife, Roy and Sue Boyer of Greenburg, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband; and infant son; her parents; a brother Chris Nielsen; and two sisters Louise Boyer and Mary Donovan. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance with Reverend Richard C. Mueller officiating. Inurnment will be in the Alliance Cemetery.
