Funeral services for Nels K. Ballard, 82, who died Saturday night at the Veterans Administration hospital in Sheridan, were held Tuesday from Adams Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dan Mangler officiating. Burial was in Willow Grove cemetery with Powder River Post No. 13, American Legion, in charge of grave side military rites.
Mr. Ballard was born on April 6, 1893 in Denmark and lived there until he was 17 years old. He came to the United States and settled in Nebraska before moving to Casper where he enlisted in the Army during World War I. He spent 16 months on the front lines in Siberia, and, after his discharge, moved back to Casper. He later moved to the Black Hills where he homesteaded and was married to Ada Mary Benton.
He homesteaded in the Riverton area until 1946 when he sold out. He lived in Laurel, Neb., for four years before moving back to Riverton. In 1962, he moved to Buffalo where he was married in 1959 to Sarah Rumsey. She preceded him in death in May 1973. He had made his home here for the past 13 years.
Mr. Ballard was a member of the World War I Barracks and VFW Post of Buffalo.
Survivors include two sons, Sonny Jens Ballard of Buffalo and Nels H. Ballard of Nebraska; two daughters, Christina Klandreud and Loretta Wohlman, both of Nebraska; two brothers, Otto Ballard of Nebraska and Pete Ballard of Denmark; three sisters, Mary Frozza and Anna Dybdal of California and Christine Henricksen of Denmark; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
