BIOGRAPHY According to Norse sagas, Gunnhild was a daughter of a peasant family in continental West Norway. She was described as quick witted and clever, though not a natural beauty. Gunnhild is said to have worked as a cook in royal kitchens. She claimed to have been the lover of Sigurd Haraldsson Mund, joint King of Norway and that her son Sverre was king Sigurd's natural son. Gunnhild married a Faroese tradesman, Unas kamm-makar (combmaker), who once worked in Bergen, West Norway, It is possible that Unas was the real father of Sverre, who would become Sverre Sigurdsson, king of Norway. When Sverre was five, Gunnhild moved to the Faroe Islands with him and Unas, and Sverre was raised in the household of Unas' brother Roe, bishop of the Faroes. Gunnhild died about 1170. 1160
